Photography Styles

There are many things that set Acorn Studios apart from other photographers. One important one is the ability to shoot in a variety of photography styles. While I consider Acorn Studios to be a modern photography studio, the style I use in a shoot depends on the client and the type of photography experience they desire.

The following guide will tell you a little more about how I define the photography styles I utilize during a shoot.

Modern Photography Style

The modern style is really Acorn Studios’ signature style. It is relaxed and very casual. The “clean” nature of the style makes it timeless. During in-studio sessions, I use simple white and light backgrounds in order to focus more attention on the subjects. Clients will typically wear light colored or neutral clothing, such as denim. Patterns and large logos are distracting and are generally best avoided. When it comes to babies, I recommend the same light or neutral clothing. Or even better, just a diaper or cute diaper cover! The modern style works well for anyone who wants a timeless portrait.

Contemporary Photography Style

The contemporary style is for the client that likes something different. I consider the style fun, fresh, creative, and yes, sometimes a little funky. During a session I might shoot with different camera angles and utilize props. I also love to incorporate bright backgrounds. In studio these backgrounds might be bright, solid colors. On-location, it could be bright natural foliage, a building or a vehicle. For this style, clothing is typically bright and modern. Hats are always encouraged! The contemporary style is perfect for babies who are unable to sit, and of course any client who wants something a little different.

Relationship Photography Style

The relationship style is all about emotion. It demonstrates the relationship between two or more people. With this style, I use simple, dark backgrounds. I also rely on camera angles and positioning to show the connection between the subjects. I recommend solid, dark colors for this type of photography style. The idea is to put the focus completely on the subject. The relationship style is great for children, parents and baby, families, couples, and of course the multi-generational portraits.

Classic Photography Style

I consider the classic style to be the most formal of the styles. Typically I’ll use a solid gray background, or on rare occasion, a more traditional canvas backdrop. Clients who like this style typically dress more formally. Suits, dresses and evening wear are best suited for the classic style. Jeans or more casual outfits do not work well in this style. This style is well suited for those who like a more traditional look, or those who want to dress more formally for a session.

Photojournalistic Photography Style

The photojournalistic style is my go-to shooting style for weddings and events. Although, I have been known to use it on-location with portrait clients. The style makes use of existing backgrounds and lighting. The goal is to capture the story as it happens. Images are often shot in both black and white, and color. This photography style is more commonly associated with weddings, but it also works well for families with small, fast-moving children.
